Geoff Winningham was born March 4, 1943, in Jackson, Tennessee. He graduated with a B.A. degree in English from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1965. He earned his Master's degree in photography from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1968, where he studied with Aaron Siskind. From 1968 to 1969, he taught photography at the University of St. Thomas in Houston.
